Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Project

The Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Project was launched by The Advocates for Human Rights on June 22, 2006. The project is designed to give Liberian refugees in the U.S. a role in promoting international justice and human rights as part of the truth and reconciliation process in Liberia. The project will also raise awareness of transitional justice mechanisms and the Liberian process here in the United States. The Advocates is working directly with Liberia’s recently inaugurated Truth and Reconciliation Commission to develop this project.

Death Penalty Project

More than a decade ago, The Advocates adopted a formal commitment to oppose the death penalty worldwide. In the United States, the capricious and arbitrary administration of the death penalty results in an enormous need for competent lawyers to assist death row inmates with their post-conviction appeals. The Advocates' Death Penalty Project was organized in 1991 to recruit Minnesota attorneys to respond to this need. The Project also provides education and advocacy on death penalty issues.

Human Rights Monitoring

With the help of hundreds of volunteers, The Advocates has monitored human rights conditions and produced more than 50 reports documenting human rights practices in more than 20 countries. The Advocates uses traditional human rights monitoring methods to document human rights abuses, but has made a practice of adapting the methodology to address cutting-edge human rights issues.
