Oral Arguments for Roper v. Simmons

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Roper v. Simmons at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 2004. The Supreme Court, which granted certiorari on Roper v. Simmons (No. 03-633) on 26 January 2004, will determine the constitutionality of the death penalty as applied to minors. Christopher Simmons was seventeen years of age when he was sentenced to death for murder. The Missouri Supreme Court vacated Simmons' death sentence, ruling that juvenile executions violate the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.
