1,000th Execution Scheduled Before End of Year
11/3/2005 12:00 PM

The 1,000th execution in the United States since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1972 is scheduled to take place before the end of the year.

In response, a group of organizations, including the ACLU, Amnesty International USA, Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Death Penalty Focus, and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, has started a campaign against the death penalty.

Under the slogan “Enough Already:  Abolish the Death Penalty,” the groups’ website provides a number of ways to take action against the death penalty.  Individually, people may send in pictures of themselves holding anti-death penalty signs, as part of a photo petition.  Also, two open letters are being compiled; one signed by faith based leaders and the other by academics.  Additionally, the website contains useful death penalty information, including a countdown to the 1000th execution.
