Minnesota Advocates submits comments on the Execution of Removal Orders and Countries to which Aliens may be Removed
8/14/2004 4:00 PM

Since 2000, Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights has challenged the United States' practice of deportations to Somalia.  Beginning with Hassan v. Reno, argued by volunteer attorney Bob Gilbertson of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, and continuing with the case of Jama v. I.N.S., handled pro bono by Briggs & Morgan attorneys Jeffrey Keyes and Kevin Magnuson, Minnesota Advocates has been successful in temporarily halting deportations until the political and human rights situation in Somalia stabilizes.

The Jama decision, currently before the Supreme Court (No. 03-674), has formed the basis of several lawsuits around the country, including Ali v. Ashcroft, (No. C02-2304P, W.D. Wa.) the class action filed in Seattle, and individual actions on behalf of petitioners in Minnesota, Louisiana, and Seattle.

On August 14, 2004, Minnesota Advocates continued its advocacy by submitting comments to the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review, regarding the Execution of Removal Orders and Countries to Which Aliens May Be Removed.
