JUNE 29: "Another Jail Term for Montesinos"

Former Peruvian spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos was sentenced to yet another jail term for his actions while head of the influential SNI intelligence agency under the government of Alberto Fujimori.  This time around he was given 15 years for embezzlement, conspiracy and corruption in his fifth conviction since 2002.  Montesinos is currently serving a nine-year sentence and faces additional trials on many other offenses.  The charges for this latest conviction stemmed from his paying of millions of dollars as bribes to television executives for their support in Fujimori’s bid for the Presidency in 2000, which was technically unconstitutional.  The former spy chief is being held at a high security naval base in Lima.
