Awards and Recognition
2009:
  • Executive Director Robin Phillips was named “Person of the Week” by Liberian Media and Advertising Services. 
  • Cheryl Thomas, Director of the Women’s Program, spoke at the 2009 Simpson College Commencement. 
  • Received the Outstanding Service to the Profession Award from Minnesota Lawyer for longstanding service to the legal profession and those whom it serves. 
  • Ahmed Sirleaf, Program Associate, was featured in the Hamline University magazine for his work on the Liberian Truch and Reconciliation Commission Diaspora Project. 
  • The Liberian History, Educational, and Development Association awarded the Honoree for Diaspora Service Award to The Advocates in recognition of The Advocates work coordinating the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission Diaspora Project.
2006:
  • Received Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association’s Access to Justice Award in recognition of commitment to promoting justice in the Latino community. 
  • Women’s Program Director Cheryl Thomas was named a 2005 “Changemaker” by Minnesota Women’s Press.
 
2005:
  • Refugee and Immigrant Program Director Emily Good was recognized by Minnesota Lawyer as one of 15 “Up and Coming” attorneys.
2004:
  • Received the 2004 Consortium Humanitarian Award in Memory of Paul Wellstone from the Consortium of African Community Organizations, in recognition of the organization’s work with African immigrants.
  • Received an award from the North American Convention for Togo in recognition of The Advocates’ services to the Togolese community.
2003:
  • Received the 2003 Daniel Levy Award for outstanding immigration services, together with Centro Legal and the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, from the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild.
1998:
  • The Advocates is ranked among “America’s Greatest Places to Work with Law Degree” by law school administrators from across the country in a book by Kimm Walton published in 1998 by Harcourt Legal & Professional Publications.
1991:
  • Publication of “The Manual on the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-Legal, Arbitrary and Summary Executions,” known as the “Minnesota Protocol.” Adopted by the United Nations as a best practice in reviewing such cases.
  • Received the American Immigration Lawyers Association Human Rights Award for contributing to the advancement of human rights.
