The third annual StopVAW (www.stopvaw.org) meeting took place from June 27-28 in Budapest, Hungary.  Nineteen of the twenty-four National Violence Against Women (VAW) Monitors attended the meeting to discuss their StopVAW work with The Advocates and the Network Women’s Program of Open Society Institute.  In addition to addressing future plans for the website, the meeting included several substantive trainings to provide Monitors with advocacy tools.  Training topics included analyzing and lobbying for domestic violence legislation in Bulgaria and Georgia, problems with the existing domestic violence law in Ukraine, mechanisms to enforce criminal laws in Montenegro, an update on the Hungarian domestic violence case decided by CEDAW, and Monitor initiatives with StopVAW.  In addition, new multilingual software for the Country Pages which will enable Monitors to post information in both their language and in English was demonstrated

In addition, The Advocates launched a new initiative through a seven-member Steering Committee.  The Steering Committee, composed of Monitors from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Montenegro and Poland, will take on greater responsibilities with regard to the Country Pages.  The Advocates and the Network Women’s Program met with the Steering Committee for two days to discuss its new role and responsibilities.  In addition to providing input on the direction of StopVAW’s country pages, the Steering Committee members will be responsible for mentoring two to three Monitors from other countries.
