The Advocates Submits Statement to Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on Refugee Protection Act

The U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing entitled “Renewing America's Commitment to the Refugee Convention: The Refugee Protection Act of 2010” on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 10:00 am EST (9:00 am CST). The Advocates for Human Rights has submitted a statement for the record to draw the Committee’s attention to specific gaps in the domestic implementation of international human rights treaty obligations related to protection for refugees and asylum seekers.

Arizona Copycat Legislation Threatens Human Rights, Protection of Crime Victims

The Advocates for Human Rights expresses grave concerns about legislation introduced today in the Minnesota Legislature. The legislation, HF 3830, copies
Arizona’s recently passed immigration law, which among other provisions places requirements on public officials to ask for proof of immigration status where there is “reasonable suspicion” that the person is undocumented. The Advocates warns that these efforts threaten human rights principles, opening wide the door to racial profiling and discrimination.
