Becoming a Client of The Advocates

Asylum Seekers:

The Advocates provides free legal assistance to asylum seekers who live in Minnesota and to torture survivors seeking asylum who reside in North or South Dakota.  You must meet our income guidelines to become a client.

If you are a resident of Minnesota or a torture survivor from North or South Dakota, are low-income, and are seeking asylum, please call our Client Intake Line at 612-341-9845.  You will be asked some preliminary questions and, if you meet our intake guidelines, we will call you back to schedule an intake appointment.

The Advocates cannot accept walk-in clients.  Please call to start the intake process.

After we meet with you our legal staff will review your case and notify you whether we are able to locate a volunteer attorney to represent you.  Due to limited resources we are unable to represent everyone who seeks our help.

Legal Advice Clinics:

The Advocates provides free legal consultations and referrals for people who have general immigration questions at legal advice clinics throughout the Twin Cities.  Click here for clinic locations and times.

Minnesota Detention Project:

The Advocates provides free legal advice and representation to all people detained in ICE custody in Minnesota at the time of their first hearing at the Bloomington Immigration Court.  Detainees meet with an attorney before seeing an immigration judge and are represented at their first hearing.  Referrals to ongoing legal services or attorneys are provided at the time of the hearing.
