Story of Asylum Seeker Riziki Hortense:
(Left) Staff Attorney Emily Good and (Right) former client Riziki Hortense
In 2003, the Congolese National Intelligence Agency (ANR), questioned and warned Riziki Hortense about her activity with a regional group she described as "people coming together to speak about justice." Later that year, members of the ANR detained and beat Riziki for using her skills as a nurse to treat injured opposition members. She was interrogated about why fellow members of the Catholic Church and "people of her tribe" were helping the opposition. Over the course of three days she was raped, beaten, and deprived of sleep, food, and water.
A priest eventually arranged for Riziki to be smuggled out of the prison disguised as a nun. She was driven to Uganda, where she decided to seek asylum in the United States. Riziki came to Minnesota to join a small Congolese community in Minneapolis. After arriving, she contacted The Advocates for Human Rights. With the help of her attorney, Refugee and Immigrant Program Director Emily Good, Riziki was granted a withholding of removal under the United Nations Convention Against Torture. This allows her to stay and work in the United States. Riziki now lives in Minnesota with her two young children, happy to be safe and free.
