The Advocates for Human Rights Human Rights Video Contest
2/1/2008 3:10 PM

The Advocates for Human Rights (formerly Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights) is an internationally recognized non-governmental 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights. The organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. As part of that celebration, we invite you or your institution and students to join us in recognizing the importance of honoring human rights in our society by participating in a video contest that highlights human rights.

The theme of the celebration and video is “protecting human rights is just as important today as it was 25 years ago.” The video must be presented in DVD format and in English or subtitled in English. It must be no more than five minutes and must incorporate the contest theme. The winning video will be judged on the basis of the following criteria: creativity and originality (40%), passion and enthusiasm about human rights (30%), and presence/mention of the Contest theme (30%). The video should focus on a human rights issue relating to one of the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. Examples of the issues you or students may wish to take on are provided below. A copy of the UDHR can be found at http://www.un.org/overview/rights. Ownership of the winning video will be retained by the producer; however, The Advocates for Human Rights will be permitted full use of the video, including, but not limited to, promotional purposes at future meetings and on its website.

Examples of human rights from the UDHR:

  • The right to be free from discrimination (Article 2)
  • The right to personal security (Article 3)
  • The right to participate in government (Article 21)
  • The right to employment (Article 23)
  • The right to education (Article 26)
  • The right to be free from persecution (Articles 4, 5, and 14)
  • The right to a place to live (Article 25)

Entrants must be at least 18 years old at time of entry and may submit one video during the Contest period, February 1, 2008 to April 30, 2008. The winning video will be shown at the annual Human Rights Awards Dinner on June 5, 2008 in Minneapolis. Approximately 1,000 human rights supporters attend this event, including community leaders in academia, law, business, policy, and advocacy. The winning video will be posted on The Advocates’ website and will be recognized on the Independent Film Producers’ (IFP) website. The winner will receive a free one-year membership to IFP and three hours of pro bono legal assistance.

We believe this will be an exciting opportunity to explore issues with a profound impact on our society and everyday lives, while offering a way to showcase filmmakers’ talent.
