UN Launches New Standards for Disarming, Demobilizing and Reintegrating Ex-Fighters

The UN has launched new standards for the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants. The standards seek to improve the DDR process, an integral part of ensuring security in post-conflict countries.
The Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Standards (IDDRS) are based on best strategies of UN staff working in peacekeeping missions.
The Standards are accompanied by three tools to maximize their application. The Standards address counseling, job training, education, and reconciliation mechanisms.
The Operational Guide provides guidance, emphasizing practical measures for the planning, implementation and assessment of DDR programs. The Briefing Note for Senior Managers includes guidance on strategies and policies.
