United Russian Party Looking to Abolish Russia's Death Penalty

In 1997, former Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed a moratorium on the death penalty. Now, the United Russia party is seeking to abolish the death penalty by 2007. According to Federation Council Committee of Foreign Affairs Chairman Mikhail Margelov, "The United Russia party is working actively to ensure the legal abolishment of death penalty by the Russian parliament in its current composition before 2007 elections" (cited in: United Russia wants to abolish death penalty before 2007 -- Russian parliamentarian, Russia News Net, RIA Novosti, 28 August 2005).
