One-Week on the Peloponnese in Greece (donated by Carolyn Chalmers & Eric Janus and Meg & Steve Swanson)
(retails at $1,100)

In the heart of Classical Greece and a few kilometers from wonderful Aegean Beaches are two new homes with modern appliances and ambiance. Each house has 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms, with a fully equipped kitchen and living room, as well as a shared patio and stone grill.

This package includes a week stay during any week in July 2012 or the choice between the weeks of 1-7 or 8-14 August 2011 in one of these beautiful houses in Lefkakia, a non-touristed agricultural village of orange and olive groves on the Aroglian plain with lovely views of the surrounding hills and insights into ancient and modern Greek village life.

In Lefkakia in the summer, there are warm beaches every place you turn. Barrel wine and fresh fish, olives, and feta are abundant.

From the Greek Village House, it is no more than half an hour by car to the ancient ruins of Epidaurus, Myceane, Tiryns and Assini.

A stay in these homes is a combination of village life, cultural opportunities, outdoor experiences, and at-home comfort.

"We had a wonderful time in Greece.... We hiked the almost-1,000 steps to the top of Palamidi fortress, saw numerous ruins and beaches, cruised to some islands, toured a vineyard, and had gyros, olives, yogurt-with-honey, and wine every day.  Your place was wonderfully spacious, comfortable, and tranquil."  -a law professor who won the bid in 2009

(Note: Lodging only. Airfare not included.)

A note from 2010's winner, Sam Myers:

"We were lucky enough to be a successful bidder for the Greece villa in 2010.  We visited in September and stayed in one of the Greek villas owned by 23 Minnesotans.  The manager of the property was extremely helpful in assisting us to secure a van that picked us up at the airport and delivered us to our villa where our rental car awaited us.

The villa was beautiful, slept four comfortably, and was fully equipped with everything that we needed to cook meals at home.  Located in the in the quiet rural village of Lefkakia, 1.5 hours south of Athens, in the Peloponnese, we were a fifteen minute car drive from the lovely port town of Nafplio.  We were only a five minute drive from the quiet beach villages of Tolo and Drepano where we lingered in the plaza over coffee and made daily runs for wine and fantastic fresh breads, fruits, cheeses and pastries.

The nearby sightseeing is tremendous, with archeological ruins, beautiful beaches, wonderful restaurants, and extremely friendly people. This was undoubtedly one of the best vacations we have ever had.  We can't wait to return."
